The Phil Campbell Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a bass fishing tournament on June 7 at Twin Forks on Bear Creek.
The First Summer Open Kids Bass Tournament will be for children 16 and under, but each team must consist of a mother or father along with the child.
The tournament begins at 6 a.m. and goes until 12 p.m. The registration fee is $25 per team and the registration and weigh-ins will be at the boat ramp.
There will be prizes for the top three teams. The total prize money paid to each winner will be based on a percentage of the total number of teams that register for the tournament.
Rita Barton, with the Phil Campbell Parks and Recreation Department, said the money raised will go toward some of the recreation areas in Phil Campbell.
“We are hoping for a big turnout,” Barton said.
“You never know with things like this since this is the first time we are putting on a bass tournament for the kids.
“You never know until you try. It’s kind of like the Hoedown. We didn’t know how that would turn out, but it has ended up being a great thing for the community.”
Barton is referring to the Phil Campbell Hoedown Festival, which will be hosted for the 13th year this summer by the Phil Campbell Parks and Recreation Department.
“If everything goes well with this fishing tournament it might end up being something we do every year,” Barton said.
Along with the cash prizes, Barton said other prizes such as fishing poles for some of the children might be awarded as well.
