Voters keep one-cent tax in place

Franklin County voters have once again approved a one-cent tax that will help both the schools and the county.

The one-cent tax amendment vote passed by a large margin.

While the tax will continue to support both the county and city school systems, this term the tax will be split 75-25 with 75 percent of the proceeds of the tax going to the schools and 25 percent of the tax going to the county to fund road and bridge projects approved through ATRIP.

“This is a tremendous thing for the county because it means we will have a source of funding for these road and bridge projects that are so necessary,” Probate Judge Barry Moore said. “I want to thank the voters for approving this amendment.”

Russellville City Schools Superintendent Rex Mayfield said he appreciated the voters turning out to show their support for the schools.

“We are so grateful to the citizens of Russellville City and Franklin County for continuing this one-cent tax,” Mayfield said.

“This is a tremendous help to our school system and something that has allowed us to continue to operate under a budget heavily affected by proration without having to borrow money.”

Franklin County Schools Superintendent Gary Williams echoed Mayfield’s thanks.

“I am humbled by this tax vote and the support it has received,” Williams said. “It is good to see the citizens care about the children of Franklin County and the education they receive.”
