Man caught breaking into officer’s home

A Red Bay man was arrested last Tuesday after an off-duty police officer caught him breaking into his home, authorities said.

Devin Glen Wells, 22, of Red Bay, was charged with second-degree burglary and second-degree criminal mischief, Russellville Police Chief Chris Hargett said.

According to Hargett, the off-duty Russellville officer was in the basement of his Virginia Avenue home about 8 p.m. when he heard a loud noise upstairs.

Hargett said the officer, who lives in the home with his brother, went upstairs to see what had caused the noise when he saw Wells trying to leave the house.

Hargett said the officer confronted Wells and then held him at gunpoint until other officers could arrive on the scene.

Hargett said there was damage to the residence when Wells reportedly kicked in the front door but no items were reported stolen.

Wells is being held in the Franklin County Jail on a $15,000 cash bond.
