Bulldogs host basketball shootout for softball program

Basketball season is in full swing, but one upcoming game isn’t really about basketball at all – it’s about softball.
The first ever Belgreen 3-on-3 Basketball Shootout will be held Dec. 5 at 8 a.m. at Belgreen High School. Late sign-ups are still being accepted for the shootout, which is a fundraiser for the Belgreen High School softball team.
“It’s going to be a fundraiser for softball, to build our softball funds up,” said Coach Clint Sikes. “It’s just something not many people do, and we thought it might generate some interest.“
The shootout is open to ages 18 and up. Cost is $50 per team.
Sikes said the shootout is a new thing for Belgreen, so they are playing it by ear to see how it goes. He said they hope to raise a significant amount of funds to help the Bulldogs softball program.
“It costs a lot to run a softball program. You have to pay for all your tournament fees and uniforms,” Sikes said. “Softball is one of those sports where there’s not a lot of money generated … You pretty much have to do all your own fundraising to have enough money to play the sport.”
Sikes encouraged people to sign up with a team or come out to watch the shootout, and he also encouraged people to come support the softball team when the season starts in the spring.
For more information or to sign up a team, call Anthony Mayberry at Road Gear at 256-443-6227; Sikes at 256-627-2463; or Coach Chris Scott at 256-436-5475.
