SPORTS YEAR IN REVIEW: Lady Tigers win 2A state championship

The Red Bay Lady Tigers won the 2A State Championship Feb. 27 by defeating Geneva County 34-29 in a closely-contested battle to the end.

Morgan Pierce led the Lady Tigers with 11 points and was named the Wilson Sporting Goods Star Player of the Game.

Geneva Co. led 24-22 at the end of three quarters, but Red Bay came back strong in the fourth, took the lead and never looked back.

It was Red Bay’s first state championship since 2001 and the sixth girl’s basketball championship in school history.  It also marked the 835th victory for Coach Donnie Roberts.  The Lady Tigers ended the season with a 25-9 record and received their championship rings in a special ceremony May 20.
