Lavinia Wicker Spilman

Lavinia Wicker Spilman, 90, passed away Feb. 28. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jim Spilman; son, Leonard Spilman; and brother, Hugh Wicker.
Mrs. Spilman is survived by her son, Bill Spilman and wife Barb of Germantown, Tenn., and daughter, Nancy Cooper and husband Randy of Littleville; five grandchildren, Kristy Street and husband Chad, Charlotte Millard and husband John, Amy Buchanan and husband Chris, Jonathan Spilman and wife Beth and Michael Spilman and fiancé Sara Ciske; five great-grandsons, Ian Millard, Gregory Millard, Cooper Buchanan, Clark Street and Shep Spilman (due April 2016).
Lavinia loved math and related subjects. She taught at Purdue University, Little Rock Junior College, Huntsville City Schools and UAH. She received a Curtis-Wright scholarship to study Aeronautical Engineering at Purdue. She worked for Curtis-Wright in aircraft performance during WWII. Lavinia was also active in Girl Scouting for many years. She loved playing bridge, gardening and flying – private pilot. Lavinia was a member of Flying Petticoats and AL chapter of 99’s. She also owned a Beech Musketeer.
People may visit with the family at Valhalla Funeral Home March 3 from 10-11:30 a.m. The funeral service, officiated by the Rev. Tim Tatum, will begin at noon at Valhalla Memory Gardens in the Chapel of Love. Entombment will immediately follow.
