Every professional basketball player has to start somewhere, and last week was an opportunity for the children of Russellville to get their start in basketball.
The Russellville City School system in partnership with the Russellville Parks and Recreation Department held its annual basketball camp in the RMS gym. Children from the age of 5 years and older were given the chance to learn the basics of basketball and to just have fun.
Coach Patrick Odom, Russellville High School basketball coach, helped to organize this event. He said he tries to help instill the fundamentals into these young minds such as “defense, offense and ball handling.”
When the day was almost over, it was time for the young athletes’ favorite part: free time with the basketballs. They could shoot, dribble or even play a game with the other children if they wanted. Every child who attended, which was approximately 45, had a great time and even learned a little something.
“We had a great time with them. We appreciate all the coaches and players who came out and helped,” said Odom.
