Vina loses close game against Cherokee

The Red Devils lost another heartbreaker to the Cherokee Indians, 27-20 in Friday night action.

Coming into this game Vina (1-4, 0-3) had lost back-to-back games and was looking to get back into the winning column – but it was not to be.

The Cherokee Indians would take a 20-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter of their Homecoming game, but yet again Vina would bounce back strong, attempting to come back when senior quarterback Tyler Renfrow scored on a one-yard sneak and two-point conversion to make it 20-14 with 10:03 left in the fourth.

The Red Devils kicked an onside kick and recovered, following it up with a nine-yard touchdown run from Blake Hardin to tie it up at 20.

“We’ve worked a lot on special teams, especially this week. We knew we wanted to do it and went out there and made it happen with our execution,” Head Coach Luke Childers said.

Cherokee would put the nail in the coffin by getting the winning score from quarterback Javar Strong on a one-yard sneak. Ethan Willingham sealed the game with an interception moments later.

“I thought the whole team played really hard,” Childers said. “We have to stop giving up the big plays. We had a great chance to win at the end of the game against a really good team. We need to play with that same intensity the rest of the season.”

Vina will go on the road again to Meek (2-5, 0-4), looking to get over their three-game slide, Friday.
