Bulldogs post mixed results in recent volleyball action

Belgreen is 2-1 in the Area and 11-8 overall following recent action on the court.

Belgreen’s varsity volleyball defeated Hackleburg three sets to zero last week. Coach Teresa Whitten said Camie Terrell and Ana Castillo both had seven kills each. Freshman Katie Dempsey and Ansley Tate each had five kills. Autumn Bragwell led the team with 31 digs, while Brianna Wood had 12 assists.

Belgreen played away at Covenant Christian Thursday and defeated the team 3-1. “We won the first two sets 25-14 and 25-18,” Whitten said. “The third set, we got too relaxed and lost 26-28. We had to fight to come back to win the 4th set 27-25.”

Dempsey had 19 kills, “the most a hitter has ever had at Belgreen in one match,” Whitten said. “She also led the team with nine aces.”

The Bulldogs lost, three sets to one, to Phillips. Dempsey led the team with 17 kills.

“I do not think we have peaked yet,” Whitten said. “I saw a glimmer of it last week, but we still have work to do. My goal at this point is that they learn to finish a match.

“As far as fundamentals, I believe we know what we need to do. We have great passers and hitters. Both setters are still new at setting and continue to get better as the season progresses. Our communication is getting stronger as well.

“If we can learn to finish a match and learn to get over mistakes, I believe we can continue to find success. I have a great bunch of young ladies, who I just want to see enjoy a successful year.”
