Phil Campbell, Belgreen, Tharptown claim early season wins
Phil Campbell 58, Tharptown 49
The Phil Campbell Bobcats held the Tharptown Wildcats to a single point in the second quarter, and it would prove to be the difference in the game, 58-49.
Tharptown jumped out to an 18-14 first quarter lead. The Bobcats outscored the Wildcats 10-1 in second quarter to take a 24-19 lead at halftime. Tharptown closed the gap to 37-34 at the end of third quarter. Phil Campbell outscored Tharptown 21-15 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Phil Campbell’s Rhett Benford led all scorers with 21 points, 17 of which came in the second half and mostly at the free throw line. Benford was followed by Hayden Copeland with 12 points and Jacob Anthony with ten points. Brody Nix added six points for the Bobcats, Gage Roberson had five points, and Thomas Baker finished with four points.
Mikey Rosson led Tharptown with 13 points. He was followed by Matt Hall with 11 points and Levi McCormack with ten points. Cole Daniel had seven points, Braden Key finished with four points, Misael Saldana had two points and T.J. McDonald and Alex Argueta scored one point each.
Belgreen 72, Colbert Heights 53
The Belgreen Bulldogs outpaced the Colbert Heights Wildcats to score an early season win, 72-53. After playing to a 14-14 tie in the first quarter, Belgreen outscored Colbert Heights 21-11 in the second quarter to take a 35-25 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 52-41 by the end of the third quarter and outscored the Wildcats 20-13 in the fourth quarter.
Mason Bragwell led Belgreen with 15 points. He was followed by Jacob Mayberry with 12 points and Brant Bragwell with 11 points. Joseph Welch had nine points, Seth Taylor had eight points, Eli Hiser added seven points, Grayson Moore contributed five points, Logan Seay and Payton Scott scored two points each, and Shane Devaney finished with one point.
Tharptown 63, Covenant Christian 56
The Tharptown Wildcats had to dig themselves out of an early hole to get the comeback win over the Covenant Christian Eagles 63-56. The Eagles led the Wildcats 18-12 at the end of the first quarter. Tharptown outscored Covenant Christian 20-18 in the second quarter to close the gap to 36-32 at halftime. The Wildcats took a two-point lead, 46-44, at the end of the third quarter and extended the lead through the fourth quarter to get the win.
Mikey Rosson led Tharptown with 22 points. He was followed by Levi McCormack with 15 points. Matt Hall, Cole Daniel and Alex Argueta had seven points each. Braden Key finished the game with five points.
Marion County 63, Vina 46
The Vina Red Devils went toe-to-toe for three quarters with a Marion County team that went to the Final Four last year. Marion County led the Red Devils by just three points in the third quarter, but the Red Raiders depth was just too much for Vina to overcome.
Clay Allison led Vina with 16 points. Tyler Renfroe added nine points, Corbin Triplett scored seven points, Jonathan Sullivan had six points, Blake Hardin had five points, and Austin Harper finished with three points.
Belgreen 73, Mantachie, MS 50
The Belgreen Bulldogs outpaced the Mantachie Mustangs in each quarter in route to an easy 73-50 win. Belgreen led Mantachie 18-12 at the end of the first quarter and 41-32 at halftime. The Bulldogs had increased their lead to 57-43 by the end of the third quarter.
Brant Bragwell led Belgreen with 20 points. He was followed by Mason Bragwell with 16 points and Jacob Mayberry with 12 points. Adam Green added nine points, Joseph Welch and Shane Devaney had four points each, Seth Taylor and Payton Scott had three points each, and Patrick Sykes finished with two points.
