County teams battle through tough week of basketball

Phil Campbell 53, Falkville 48 (Boys)

The Phil Campbell Bobcats won game one of their Thanksgiving Holiday Tournament adventure at Wallace State Community College last week 53-48.

The Bobcats used a strong first half to get the victory. Phil Campbell outscored Falkville 19-14 in the first quarter and 12-9 in the second quarter to take a 31-23 lead into the locker room. Both teams played to a stalemate in the third quarter before Falkville cut into the Bobcats’ lead in the fourth quarter, outscoring Phil Campbell 14-11.

The Bobcats were led by Rhett Benford and Peyton Thomas. Both players scored 16 points each. Hayden Copeland followed with 13 points. Thomas Baker and Brody Nix each scored four points in the win.

Coosa Christian 66, Phil Campbell 63

Coosa Christian used strong starts each half to defeat the Phil Campbell Bobcats in the finals of the Thanksgiving Tournament at Wallace State Community College Saturday, 66-63.

Coosa Christian outscored Phil Campbell 21-14 in the first quarter, and both teams played even in the second quarter to give Coosa Christian a 39-32 halftime lead. Coosa Christian extended that lead with a strong third quarter, outscoring Phil Campbell 15-9 to take a 54-41 lead into the final period of play. The Bobcats made a come-from-behind bid in the fourth quarter, outscoring Coosa Christian, 21-12 but it wouldn’t be enough.

Copeland led Phil Campbell with 18 points. He was followed by Gage Roberson with 13 points. Others scoring for the Bobcats were Benford with nine points, Thomas with eight points, Nix with six points, Nate Owens with four points, Jacob Anthony with three points and Thomas Baker with two points.

Kossuth (Miss.) 54, Red Bay 43 (Boys)

The Red Bay Tigers fell to Kossuth, Miss., last week 54-43. The Tigers trailed Kossuth 38-25 at halftime but cut into the lead in the third quarter, 45-37.

Colton Corum led Red Bay with 12 points. Aeron Moor had nine points, Hunter Bays scored eight points, Gath Weatherford finished with seven points, Peyton Green had four points and Noah Brewer finished with three points.

Phillips 45, Vina 26 (Girls)

After taking a 13-11 first quarter lead, the Vina Red Devils were outscored 34-13 by the Phillips Bears in the final three quarters of the game. The Red Devils ended up losing the game 45-26.

Emma Humphres scored 14 points for Vina. Abby Hester, Kaitlyn King and Gracie Raper scored three points each, while Jordan Scott added one point for the Red Devils.
