The first Red Bay City Council meeting of 2017 was held Jan. 3 at 12:30 p.m., following a city council work session at noon.

Old business began with the appointments of Jim Lovette (to fill the expired term of Jeff Clark) to the Industrial Development Board and Pat Nelson (to fill the unexpired term of Judy Malone) to the Cemetery Board. The Beautification Committee did not have any appointments to fill the remaining two spots on the five-member committee, so the remaining appointments were tabled to the next meeting.

The Education Committee for HOSA, FHA, FBLA and FFCLA were awarded $250 for participation in district competitions. If any of the teams make it to their state competition, an additional $500 will be granted, and an additional $750 if they make it to their national competition. Finally, the Education Committee Request for school security was tabled to the next meeting.

Law Enforcement Appreciation Day will be observed Jan. 9.

The Weather Preparedness Tax Holiday for 2017 will be observed in Red Bay beginning Feb. 24, at 12:01 a.m. and ending Feb. 26 at midnight. People can pick up a list of covered items at city hall or visit www.cityofredbay.org or www.revenue.alabama.gov.

The deadline for submitting a bid on declared surplus property will be Jan. 16 at 4 p.m. For a list of the properties, contact city hall.

The next regularly-scheduled council meeting will be held Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. and will be preceded by a 30-minute work session.
