Vina hosts Junior Olympic Qualifier
Several young Franklin County shooting athletes recently participated in a Junior Olympic Qualifier in Vina.
This year’s Junior Olympic Qualifier was co-hosted with the Scholastic Clay Target Program, according to event coordinator Tim Burks.
“Athletes had the opportunity to triple medal at this year’s state level Junior Olympic Qualifier and competition,” Burks said.
USA Shooting, SCTP and JO gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded.
“Those meeting the minimum qualifying score required by the USA Olympic Committee will be invited to compete at the nationals in Colorado Springs, Colo., the last week of this month,” Burks added. “Male and female athletes ages 20 and younger will be competing for one of the coveted national team slots awarded each year during the finals at this match.”
The USAS path offers opportunities for those who seek to be their best to train with master instructors and offers opportunities for team members to represent the U.S. during World Championship, ISSF and Olympic events.
Burks said the Franklin County Shooting Sports program will soon offer international skeet thanks to an NRA grant received last month, which funded the equipment needed.
“Youth looking to compete in international skeet and bunker trap will soon have a place right here in their home county to do so,” Burks said. “We compete in sporting clay events during the off season from bunker and skeet. We hope to soon secure a sporting clay course in Franklin County, also.”
Burks thanked the Town of Vina staff and friends for all their assistance.
