Celebrating Franklin County’s do-gooders

It’s just human nature that some events and seasons bring out the best in people. That’s especially true here in Franklin County, where the giving hearts of people in this community overflow with generosity. In our little corner of the state, however, it’s not just certain times that move our community toward charitable endeavors; it’s all year round.

We think that’s something worth celebrating.

During times of sorrow or distress, such as natural disasters, people naturally feel drawn to open their hands, hearts and wallets to help neighbors in need – whether near or far, as we saw last year when this county reached out to Lumberton, Texas, following the toll taken by Hurricane Harvey. Whether it’s on a micro level, such as during the death of a family or friend, or a more macro level, such as the unforgettable destruction April 11, 2007, people of this community has always been ready and willing to lend a hand wherever it is needed.

Christmas is another time that moves many to be a blessing to others. In this annual time of peace and joy, we have seen so many in Franklin County cherish the message that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Toy drives, free meals and other events for those in need are always well supported.

But it’s not just during disasters and holidays that the people of this community give of themselves, and that’s why the “do-gooders” of Franklin County are truly to be commended. Helping others isn’t just a box for them to tick off once or twice a year; it’s a life-defining mindset that guides everything they do.

In this issue of the Franklin County Times alone, we highlight two large-scale efforts to give a boost to those in need. A mission team from Russellville has been reaching out to impoverished children in Haiti, displaying generosity on all fronts by ministering in both physical and spiritual needs. On the home front, two local religious groups are working to put together Roc the Lot, an annual event that provides a fun time – as well as needed school supplies – for the children of this community.

These efforts are just two of many that are taking place all the time across Franklin County. From benefit 5Ks and raffles to food drives and more, we see Franklin County citizens being eager to give of themselves to others to improve the lives of friends and neighbors – here, and all around the world. We’re fortunate to live in a community that is so caring, and we want to offer our sincere praise to the do-gooders of Franklin County.
