Young football players got a chance to take their game to the turf of the Russellville High School football stadium for the 2018 RHS Youth Football Camp.

The one-day camp, held July 23, served as an opportunity for youth athletes to learn valuable skills from new Russellville head coach John Ritter and his staff of assistants while also sharing the field with current Golden Tiger players in a fun atmosphere.

For a $25 registration fee, campers ranging from kindergarten through eighth grade were able to participate in drills and work on their skills in a good learning environment for a couple of hours.

The camp took place from 6-8 p.m., and participants got to enjoy a pizza supper after the camp was finished.

The Russellville head coach said he sees the importance of building a good relationship between the community and the RHS program.

“We’re just kind of building bridges so these young kids see what our kids go through and create some excitement in the community,” Ritter explained.

Campers were given a break from the usual late July heat because of the evening starting time. About 50 children participated, and Ritter said he was pleased with the turnout.

“That’s outstanding for year one, and it will only get bigger and better from here,” he said.

With kickoff of the 2018 Russellville season only five weeks away, events like camps and 7-on-7 tournaments are a good way to help build a program and also serve as a reminder that football season is fast approaching.
