Book Lovers sponsor Cancer Walk

The September meeting of Book Lovers Study Club was held at the home of Martha Sibley, with Debbie Beason and Lela Ray serving as co-hostesses.

Christine Steele, GFWC Alabama president, presented the program. She highlighted the State President’s Project, Celebrating 125 Years of Changing Lives Through Scholarships. Mrs. Steele discussed the different scholarship donation levels and the scholarships that AFWC presents annually.

The institute, Celebrating the Sue and Virginia Hester Special Education Graduate Scholarship, was given by Nina McNatt. A silent auction was held to raise money for this scholarship.

The club’s yearbook was distributed to members and reviewed.

The Community Service Program chairs gave reports on the arts, conservation, education, home life, international outreach and public issues.

As one of the Home Life projects this year, Book Lovers Study Club will sponsor a Breast Cancer Awareness and Fundraiser Walk. Sheila Upchurch and Rebecca Reeves, who are chairing the walk, reported the details to club members. The walk will be held Oct. 27 at the RHS Field House Touchdown Club Room. Registration is from 8:30-9 a.m., with the walk beginning at 9 a.m. The registration is $20, which includes a T-shirt for the first 200 to register, post-walk refreshments and goody bag.

The walk will benefit the Walking the Road to Wellness Organization and locally to help women on their journey to wellness and recovery.

A report on the annual fundraiser was given by Martha Sibley. The Holiday Tour of Homes will be held Dec. 9.  Homes are being confirmed and committees designated.

Book Lovers will continue to support “The Roxy’s Legend of Toyland,” which will be presented Nov. 28 through Dec. 2.
