Vina Beta students bring holiday cheer to Generations
Dec. 10, 28 students from Vina High School’s Beta Club spent the morning at Generations of Red Bay to decorate the doors for the residents.
Emma Humphres, whose mother works at the nursing home, asked club sponsor Sarah Jane Hattaway if students could decorate the residents’ doors, and other students got on board wanting to spread some Christmas cheer.
This energy and enthusiasm, Hattaway said, is what she wanted when she started the Beta Club chapter at Vina. She said she wanted the students to have some control of what they did.
“It is important that they have leadership roles and give input on what types of service projects they would like to do,” she said.
While decorating, the staff, residents and some family members watched and thanked the students for their kindness.
Hattaway said it made her proud to see the compassion her Beta students have. They not only decorated the doors, but some students spent time talking with the residents and staff. A few students have relatives or family friends who stay in the nursing home.
Vina Principal Brent Gillespie said he is proud Vina can do something for the community.
“Community service is a big thing for me,” he said, “and any time our students can get out into the community, I think it’s important.”
