Nolen scores 29 in Tharptown win over Vina
Sophomore Winston Nolen drained 29 points, including 14 in the first quarter, to help lead the Tharptown Wildcats past the Vina Red Devils 72-62 last week.
Tharptown jumped out to a 23-15 first quarter lead and extended that lead to 40-28 by halftime. Another Wildcat sophomore, Colton Simmons, scored 10 of his game-high 12 points in a 21-point third quarter for Tharptown.
Vina scored 22 in the third, including eight points by Braden Moomaw, to make the score 61-50.
Following Nolen and Simmons was sophomore Hayden Moss with nine points and junior Edward Lopez with nine points. Carson Petree added six points, Les Montgomery four points and Ruben Alfaro three points.
Nolen was 13-of-23 from the field with eight rebounds and four steals. Lopez added 10 rebounds, five steals and four blocked shots.
Jackson Landers led Vina with 20 points, including going 10-for-12 from the free throw line. Moomaw followed with 15 points and Tanner Miller with 10 points.
In the varsity girls game, Kaitlyn King hit a three-pointer with 16 seconds to go in the game to give the Vina Red Devils the go-ahead lead and the win, 52-51.
Vina led Tharptown 12-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats outscored the Red Devils 15-10 in the second quarter to take a 25-22 halftime lead, but Vina tied the game 33-33 at the end of the third quarter and outscored Tharptown 19-18 in the fourth quarter to win the game.
Freshman Rayleigh Guin led Vina with 16 points, with 14 of those points coming in the second half. Guin also had six assists. King followed with 15 points, which included four three-pointers. Sara Scott added eight points, all free throws and ten rebounds. Sandra Johnson finished the game with six points, Emma Humphres five points and Hailey Cantrell two points.
Aly Vandiver led Tharptown with 11 points. Brooke Daily and Shaylee Wieting added 10 points each. Catie Dawson and Gracie Montgomery finished the game with seven points each. Adrianna Borden contributed four points and Taylor Cameron two points.
