Belgreen wins Winston County Tournament

The Belgreen Bulldogs cruised to an easy 68-37 win over the Winston County Yellow Jackets to win the Winston County Christmas Tournament during the holiday break.

“It was a good tournament for us,” said Belgreen coach Chad Green. “We’ve improved offensively and defensively throughout the year. We are getting a lot better.

“We have some tough games coming up in January that we need to do well in and starting prepping for the post-season tournament run,” Green added. “We’ve really focused on improving our ball movement and our help-side defense. That’s been our main focus and areas we can always improve on.”

With the game tied 15-15 at the end of the first quarter, Belgreen demoralized the Yellow Jackets in the second quarter, outscoring the host team 33-10 to blow the game open early. Belgreen led Winston County 48-25 at halftime and extended that lead to 62-29 at the end of the third quarter – and the route was on.

Gracie Dempsey led Belgreen with 18 points, followed by Emma Dempsey with 14 points. Emma Willingham added nine points, Gabbie Moore eight points, Autumn Bragwell six points, Ansley Tate five points and Katie Dempsey four points.

Belgreen 77, Addison 65

Emma Dempsey scored 20 points in the second and third quarter to help power the Belgreen Bulldogs past the Addison Bulldogs 77-65.

Belgreen led Addison 16-15 at the end of the first quarter and outscored Addison 51-25 in the second and third quarter to take a 67-40 lead into the final quarter. The game seemed secure, but Addison got hot, outscoring Belgren 25-10 in the fourth quarter to make the game a little too close for comfort.

Emma Dempsey led Belgreen with 23 points, and Moore followed with 20 points. Willingham and Gracie Dempsey added 11 points each. Tate contributed five points, and Megan Smith and Katie Dempsey scored four points each.

Belgreen 44, Decatur Heritage 41

The Belgreen Bulldogs made a second half rally that lifted them past the Decatur Heritage Eagles 44-41.

Decatur Heritage took a 21-15 first quarter lead and extended that lead to 29-22 at halftime. Belgreen came storming back in the third quarter, holding the Eagles to just two points and taking a 34-31 lead they maintained throughout the fourth quarter.

Emma Dempsey led the Bulldogs with 14 points. Willingham added nine points, Moore eight points, Tate six points, Gracie Dempsey five points and Katie Dempsey two points.
