Belgreen boys win third-straight area title

Brant Bragwell and Mason Bragwell combined for 59 points to help led the Belgreen Bulldogs to their third straight area title with an easy 90-65 win over Hackleburg Saturday night. The win earned the Bulldogs the right to host Covenant Christian in the subregion Tuesday night at 7 p.m., where a win would send Belgreen back to the Northwest Regionals at Wallace State Community College; results were not available as of press deadline.

“Winning an area championship three times in a row is special,” said Belgreen coach Clint Isbell. “It’s a testament to the hard work our kids put in at Belgreen. It’s special for these seniors to go out winning the area again.

“We have been playing much better lately,” Isbell added. “We have been playing more like a team and have really grown. It took a while to get to the point of playing together because we had a lot of new players. We have done a good job of playing unselfishly toward the end of the year. The guys see the way they are playing now and are really having fun with it.”

Brant Bragwell led Belgreen with 30 points, followed by Mason Bragwell with 29 points. Kostner Bryant and Scout Bragwell added eight points each. Tanner Warhurst finished the game with six points, Isac Willingham four points, Gaven Taylor three points and Brodie Vandiver two points.

Semifinals: Belgreen 96, Brilliant 49

Belgreen’s Bragwell trio combined for 68 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 96-49 route of the Brilliant Tigers in the 1A, Area 12 semifinals.

Belgreen jumped on Brilliant quickly, outscoring the Tigers 26-12 in the first quarter. Belgreen put the game away in the second quarter, outscoring Brilliant 34-9 to take a 60-21 halftime lead.

Brant Bragwell hit four three-pointers and scored 18 first-half points. Scout Bragwell also hit four three-pointers and scored 19 first-half points. Mason Bragwell scored 15 first-half points.

Belgreen extended its dominant lead to 85-38 at the end of the third quarter.
