Red Devil boys take one from Hackleburg in area series

The Vina Red Devils were able to pick off an area win over the Hackleburg Panthers last week in an area series.

Vina beat Hackleburg 11-1 in game two of the series. The Panthers, however, won the series by winning game one 16-12 and game three 11-8.

Vina broke through a scoreless time in game two in the top of the third inning with two runs. The Red Devils would score two more in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the sixth to get the easy win.

Isac Harper had a big day at the plate for Vina, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and scoring twice.

Braden Moomaw and Chance Kennedy scored two runs each.

Jackson Landers pitched a complete game, striking out six batters and giving up three hits and no earned runs.

Both teams made five errors each.

In game one of the series, Hackleburg exploded for 11 runs in the top of the first inning. Vina didn’t give up, however, slowly chipping away before ultimately losing 16-12.

Vina outhit Hackleburg 16 hits to 12 hits but couldn’t overcome six fielding errors.

Several Vina players had big days at the plate. Leading the way were Landers and Harper, with three hits, an RBI and three scores for Landers and two hits, four RBIs and a run for Harper.

Moomaw had two hits and an RBI and scored two runs. Kennedy scored twice. Jacob Lewis had three hits and three RBIs. Haze Weatherford had two hits and scored twice.

In game three of the series, Vina couldn’t hold onto an early lead, losing 11-8 to Hackleburg.

Vina led Hackleburg 5-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Panthers put six runs on the board to take a 7-5 lead. Vina reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth inning, scoring three runs to lead 8-7.  Hackleburg, however, answered in the bottom of the sixth with four runs to win the game.

Moomaw had a big game at the top of the lineup going 3-for-4, including a triple and three RBIs and scoring two runs.

Kennedy had two hits, including a double and two RBIs.
