School board honors RHS principal

At the June 4 Russellville City Schools Board of Education meeting, Russellville High School Principal Jason Goodwin was recognized for receiving a scholarship from the School Superintendents of Alabama. The $1,000 Schneider Electric Scholarship is awarded to educators pursuing graduate degrees in school administration.

“I’m fortunate, proud and honored to have received this,” said Goodwin.

Goodwin is pursuing a doctorate in organizational leadership and change with a focus on rural education at the University of West Alabama. Goodwin said he chose this degree because RHS is in such a rural area, and he wants to know all of its needs and the best ways to address them.

He said he started this degree a year ago and is planning on completing it next year in July.

During the business portion of the meeting, the board made personnel decisions, including:

  • Accepting Russellville Elementary School teacher Caitlin Witt’s leave of absence from Aug. 22 through Sept. 30
  • Accepting Ben Phillips’ employment in position as custodian at RES effective June 17
  • Accepting Peyton Balentine’s employment in position as custodian at RES effective June 17
  • Accepting Cynthia Bowden’s employment in position as teacher at West Elementary School effective Aug. 2
  • Accepting Talitha Fleming’s transfer in position from teacher at WES to library media specialist at WES
  • Accepting Ellie Kerby as a volunteer with Russellville Middle School Cheer
  • Accepting Terrell Groce as a volunteer with girls’ basketball
  • Accepting the special personnel recommendation of Amy Grimes as a teacher at WES effective Aug. 2, contingent upon issuance of Alabama teaching certificate
