AMLA plans 600 backpack giveaway

The Tennessee Valley Authority and the Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association have come together to give away 600 backpacks to children at the Tennessee Valley Hunting and Fishing Expo July 12-14 – all as part of an effort to encourage parents to take children fishing or camping in the Tennessee Valley region.

Each year TVA’s Community Outreach Support Program assists with funding in several areas related to environmental stewardship, which is part of its mission. With funding provided by TVA, AMLA will give away backpacks to the first 200 children to AMLA’s booth each day of the annual expo held at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

AMLA President and CEO Tami Reist said she encouraged Franklin County families to join the droves of people who will attend the annual expo, which AMLA will be attending for the seventh year.

“It’s just a fun event for families to come to,” said Reist, adding the expo attracts people from across Alabama as well as surrounding states.

The AMLA will use the opportunity to promote the resources and amenities in north Alabama – including Franklin County hotspots like the Bear Creek Lakes, Dismals Canyon and the kayak trail in Red Bay.

“The Tennessee Valley region is filled with numerous natural wonders, parks, campgrounds and eight lakes that offer endless opportunities for families to experience together,” said Reist. “TVA has a long history of commitment to the region it serves. We appreciate their willingness to give back and to promote the use of the natural resources found across the region.”

The backpacks will boast the TVA and AMLA logos.

The Tennessee Valley Huntsville and Fishing Expo is a destination event for hunting, fishing and outdoor enthusiasts, as well as the top outdoor retailers and organizations. The expo will feature hands-on product demonstrations from a wide range of hunting and fishing venues July 12 from 3-9 p.m., July 13 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and July 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission to the expo is $10 per person, with free admission for children 12 years old and younger. The Von Braun Center is located at 700 Monroe St. SW in downtown Huntsville. For more information, visit www.tvhfe.com
