Riverbend plans Community Talk against underage drinking

When it comes to preventing youth alcohol use and abuse, Riverbend Prevention is taking an active approach. Riverbend will host a Community Talk against underage drinking Aug. 22, and all community members are invited to attend.

Riverbend’s Community Talk will be a “workshop-style meeting with a few guest speakers plus a panel of experts,” prevention specialist Robyn Russell explained.

“This is a fun and informative way to learn how to be part of the solution to real issues about underage drinking in Franklin County,” Russell added.

The Aug. 22 event is set for the Russellville High School cafeteria from 6-8 p.m. Organizers have titled it “20/20 Vision for 2020 – You drink. You drive. You lose.”

Russell said featured speakers will run the gamut, both in terms of their role in alcohol abuse prevention as well as the topics they will tackle at the workshop.

“We will have guest speakers presenting information on underage drinking and a panel of local experts including first responders, law enforcement, school administration, substance abuse counselors and more to answer questions as you begin the 2019-2020 school year,” Russell said. “All students, parents, professionals and community members in and around Franklin County are encouraged to attend.”

Topics will include:

  • Personal substance abuse stories
  • Risks and harmful impacts of alcohol on youth
  • How to talk with youth and family members about underage drinking
  • Ways to prevent youth alcohol use and abuse
  • Opportunities to become “community prevention heroes and advocates”

Those planning to attend can RSVP by emailing prevention@rcmh.org, calling 256-768-7497 or visiting  https://tinyurl.com/y33ctna9.
