Late surge lifts Red Bay past Sheffield

Going undefeated isn’t easy. The Red Bay Tigers had to ride a late second-half surge to pull past the Sheffield Bulldogs 30-14 and remain unbeaten on the year.

The win moves the Tigers one step closer to an outright region championship, as well.

Red Bay fell behind early in the first quarter, giving up a rare big-play touchdown – a 69-yard pass – to go up 8-0.

Red Bay tied the game up with 4:48 to go in the second quarter on a two-yard run by Hunter King. The two-point conversion run by Colyn Humphres tied the game 8-8.

Sheffield answered the Tigers quickly with 3:03 to go in the half on another big play from scrimmage. This time it was a 28-yard run to give the Bulldogs a 14-8 lead at halftime.

Red Bay took control of the game in the second half, scoring three unanswered touchdowns.

Humphres scored on a 39-yard run with 8:46 to go in the third quarter to tie the game at 14-14, and he hit paydirt again early in the fourth quarter on a six-yard run and two-point conversion run to give the Tigers a 22-14 lead.

Red Bay added another score with 5:03 to go in the game on a four-yard run by Jalen Vinson. Vinson converted the two-point conversion to give the Tigers a 30-14 win.

King and Humphres had big nights on the ground: King ran the ball 24 times for 160 yards and a touchdown, and Humphres carried the ball 15 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

Red Bay accumulated 382 total yards. The Tigers’ usually stingy defense gave up 307 total yards to the Bulldogs.

Jake Pounds and Cam McKinney led the Tigers defensively with 12 and 11 tackles, respectively.
