Lady Red Devils topple Hackleburg to improve in area

The Vina Red Devils improved to 4-1 in area play with a 58-52 win over the Hackleburg Panthers.

Rayleigh Guin scored 28 points, going 12 for 19 from the free throw line, to lead the Red Devils to victory.

Hackleburg jumped out to a 13-6 first quarter lead, but Vina roared back to take a 20-15 lead at halftime. Hackleburg reclaimed the lead at the end of the third quarter 36-33.

Vina outscored the Panthers 25-16 in the fourth quarter to get the win.

Sara Scott added 12 points for Vina. Kaitlyn King scored eight points, Abbie Petree four points, Kaitlyn Athey three points, Sara Johnson two points and Hailey Cantrell one point.

Phillips 57, Vina 50

Vina lost a heartbreaker Monday to area rival Phillips 57-50.

A one-point game with three minutes to go, the tide shifted when Gracie Hallman hit a three-pointer and Aly McCollum scored to force Vina into fouling.

Vina led Phillips 15-12 at the end of the first quarter on two three’s by King and one by Athey. Phillips had tied the game 29-29 by halftime.

The Bears led by two points, 49-47, at the end of the third quarter.

King led Vina with 14 points, followed by Athey and Guin with 10 points each. Scott scored nine points, and Johnson tallied four.
