East Franklin Volunteer Fire Department hosts candidate supper

It is getting closer to election time, and the East Franklin Volunteer Fire Department is giving community members a chance to come out and meet the candidates while supporting their local fire department.

East Franklin VFD will host its annual candidate supper Feb. 21 from 4-7 p.m. at the fire department, located at 10443 Highway 81 in Phil Campbell.

“We try to do one when election times are up to give people an opportunity to meet and greet with the candidates,” explained East Franklin Volunteer Fire Chief Rodney Alexander. “First impressions are a big thing, especially when it can get you a vote.”

The supper will feature William Earl Bishop’s smoked chicken and pulled barbecue pork plates for $10 a plate. Proceeds from the dinner will go toward the repair of the pump on Fire Engine 3.

There is no RSVP necessary. Alexander said those in attendance can pick up their plate to go or sit and mingle with candidates.

Candidates will not be given a formal time to speak to the crowd but instead will talk to community members on a one-on-one basis.

“It’s going to give people an opportunity, and the candidates an opportunity, to talk to individuals that are there at the fundraiser,” Alexander said.

Alexander said he anticipates a large number of candidates in attendance – primarily those who are running for a county position in the upcoming election but also officials who hold a county position that is not up for reelection yet.

“We just encourage everyone to come out and take some time to meet and greet with candidates,” Alexander said.
