Club Chronicles: Study Club members communicate remotely as COVID-19 pandemic limitations continue

The GFWC/AFWC Book Lovers Study Club joins many other clubs in acknowledging the restrictions as mandated by local, state and national governments by not conducting its regular monthly meeting.

During this precarious time, club members continue to communicate with others remotely. A lot of brainstorming with club members is taking place via email or phone – about future projects and how to make a difference by living the volunteer spirit right from home.

Some GFWC clubs have adopted a Protective Masks Project during this pandemic. Masks are being made for medical personnel and other individuals with mask needs.

These masks are not used in place of the N95 masks.

You can visit the Turban Project website for instructions. When you have finished the masks, call your hospital/primary care physician, police department, grocery store, nursing home or town health department to arrange a drop-off. Be sure to tell them these are non-infection masks.

April is a busy month for the Alabama Federation of Women’s Clubs as it celebrates its 125th anniversary. The 2020 AFWC Convention was planned to acknowledge this major milestone for club members across the state.  Unfortunately, because of the coronavirus pandemic, it is canceled.

This is the first time the AFWC Convention has ever been canceled.

The 125th convention opening session was to kick off April 17 at the South Highland Presbyterian Church. This is the church where the first organized meeting of AFWC was held.

The remainder of the convention was planned for the Hampton Inn and Suites-Tutwiler Hotel in downtown Birmingham. Gov. Kay Ivey was to address the opening session.

Needless to say, many clubwomen across the state are disappointed.

The state and national Community Service Awards, scholarships and service awards will be presented at a later date.

Meanwhile, many clubs will continue their community service projects as well as celebrate GFWC’s Federation Day – April 24.
