2020 All-Star Sports Week falls victim to coronavirus

The Alabama High School Athletic Association announced on Monday that the annual All-Star Sports Week in July has been cancelled for this year.

Several local athletes and coaches had been selected to participate in the event.

Phil Campbell girls basketball coach Craig Thomas was selected to coach the North girls All-Stars.

“It’s disappointing,” said Thomas. “It is a great honor to be selected to coach this team, and it was a huge honor for the players to be selected. It is a recognition of how hard they have worked. I just hate they won’t get to participate in the game.”

Thomas would have had the opportunity to coach his daughter, Katie, who was selected to the North team, along with Belgreen forward Emma Dempsey.

Red Bay’s Braden Ray and Russellville’s Chandler Dyas were selected to the North boys basketball team.

Russellville’s Eric Boutwell was selected to the North boys golf team.
