Lady Golden Tigers topple two teams, lose area contest

The Russellville Lady Golden Tigers picked up a couple of wins and a loss in recent volleyball action.

RHS went to Leighton Sept. 1 and took on the Lady Indians of both Colbert County and Cherokee.

Russellville defeated CCHS 2-0 by scores of 25-13 and 25-16. Abby Green had 14 assists, two kills, eight aces and a block to lead RHS. Jayna Poss picked up four kills and two blocks, and Anna Beth Oliver helped out with three kills and two aces. Caroline Sparks added six kills and two blocks for the winning squad.

The Lady Golden Tigers also swept Cherokee, by scores of 25-17 and 25-16. Green had 12 assists, three digs, two kills and a block, while Poss pitched in with six kills, three blocks and two aces. Oliver had four aces and three kills, and Sparks added four kills and three blocks. Leah Rushing had eight digs, and Camille Lynn was accurate with the serve and had six aces.

Sept. 3 RHS hosted the Lawrence County Lady Red Devils for a Class 5A, Area 15 match. The Lady Devils were too much for Russellville this time and took a 3-0 win by scores of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-16.

“I think if we could limit our errors that we would definitely beat teams like Lawrence County,” said Russellville head coach Whitney Glover.  “I felt like that just killed our momentum. We would have some momentum going, and then we started having a couple of errors, and it just went downhill from there.

“They work hard, and it’s a great group of girls, but we’ve just got to push a little bit harder,” Glover added.
