Phil Campbell, Tharptown, Vina teams all suffer losses on gridiron

It was a rough week for county schools on the gridiron, as Phil Campbell, Tharptown and Vina all lost. Red Bay had an open date.

Phil Campbell entered Friday night’s game with a 4-0 record, but the Bobcats hadn’t faced stiff competition. This past week was a different story, going on the road to Clements High School in a region contest.

Phil Cambpell lost to the Colts 38-18.

Clements put up 455 total yard of offense. The Bobcat offense, which accumulated more than 600 yards the week before against Elkmont, was limited to 235 against the Colts.

The Colts dominated the ground game with 308 yards rushing and hit the passes when they needed to, completing seven of 11 for 147 yards.

Luke Barnwell completed seven of 10 passes but limited yardage at 48. Barnwell also ran the ball for 98 yards on 21 carries and scored twice.

Clements struck first midway through the first quarter to take an 8-0 lead. Phil Campbell responded on the ensuing drive, capping it off with a two-yard touchdown run by Bryant Hyde to cut the Colts’ lead to 8-6.

Clements didn’t score again until the waning seconds of the second quarter to give the Colts a 16-6 halftime lead.

Phil Cambpell closed the gap with 5:32 to go in the third quarter on a four-yard run by Barnwell to cut Clements’ lead to 16-12, but it was almost all Colts from there. The home team scored three unanswered touchdowns, two in the third quarter and one in the fourth, to take a 38-12 lead.

Phil Campbell added a late score on a 22-yard run by Barnwell to hit the final score of 38-18.

Phil Cambpell is off Friday night but will return to action next week at Haleyville.

Tharptown and Vina both suffered lopsided defeats Friday. The Wildcats lost to Lexington 55-0, while the Red Devils lost to Decatur Heritage 53-8.

Tharptown will host Red Bay Friday night. Vina will travel to Waterloo.
