BLOWOUT: Red Devils get first win of season

The Vina Red Devils notched their first win of the season with a 32-6 blowout of the Cherokee Indians.

“It was a great team win for us,” said Vina coach Luke Childers. “I am really happy we could get a win on homecoming. We’ve struggled getting offense going this year, but we came out and passed the ball really well.

“Our receivers made some tough catches and really put us in a position to score some touchdowns,” Childers added. “I am really happy with our whole defense and the way our offensive line pass blocked. Hopefully this will give our guys some confidence, and we can be competitive and play hard the rest of the season.”

Dawson Miller scored first for Vina on a one-yard run with 42 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Quarterback Conner Davidson added the first of three two-point conversions to give the Red Devils an 8-0 lead.

Davidson connected with Nate Stidham for a 30-yard touchdown pass with 8:16 to go in the second quarter to give the Red Devils a 16-0 lead.

Stidham scored again with 2:21 to go in the third quarter on a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Davidson found Stidham one more time late in the third quarter on a 39-yard pass to cap off the Red Devils’ scoring. Miller added the two-point conversion on the last touchdown.

Cayden Lawler had 22 total tackles for Vina. Nathan Byrd had two sacks.

Vina travels to Hackleburg Friday night.
