Red Bay, RHS advance to second round

The Red Bay Tigers and the Russellville Golden Tigers both advanced to the second round of the state football playoffs. In Class 2A, Red Bay (9-1) shut out Winston County 26-0. In Class 5A, Russellville (9-2) edged out a tough Fairview team 14-7.

Red Bay will be on the road this week, traveling to Spring Garden. The Panthers (10-1) beat Tanner 72-21 to advance.

Red Bay and Spring Garden have never met on the football field.

On the field the Panthers are 8-1. They have two forfeit wins to their credit. Spring Garden is averaging 46.6 points per game and giving up 11.4 points per game.

The Panthers won Class 2A, Region 6, with their only loss coming against Hokes Bluff.

The Panthers are 11-11 in playoff games but 2-6 in secondround games. Red Bay is 26-29 in playoff games and 7-8 in secondround games.

Russellville will remain home and host Leeds.

The Greenwave (9-2) beat Boaz 21-0 to advance. Russellville and Leeds have never met on the football field.

The Greenwave were able to complete an entire season without any cancellations or forfeits. Leeds, home of Charles Barkley, averaged 27.2 points per game this season while giving up 13.6 points per game. The Greenwave finished second in Class 5A, Region 6 to Alexandria. Leeds’ two losses were to Sylacauga 33-27 to open the season and to Alexandria 24-9 to close out the regular season.

The Greenwave are 45-23 in playoff competition and 10-10 in the second round. Russellville is 63-31 in the playoffs and 16-8 in second round games.
