It is not every day children have the opportunity to learn basketball from a Harlem Globetrotter, but that is exactly what they can expect this year if they sign up for Russellville Parks and Recreation’s basketball camp.

The camp will be Jan. 4 from 8 a.m. to noon in the Ralph C. Bishop Center, with Russellville native and Harlem Globetrotter Siran Winston coaching the young athletes in attendance.

“We are really excited about it,” said Parks and Recreation Director Donnie Flanagan. “It isn’t every day your kid gets to go to camp with a Harlem Globetrotter.”

Anyone who is interested in participating should register at the Parks and Recreation Department as soon as possible to reserve a spot.

Because of COVID-19 restrictions, the camp will be limited to 20 players. Flanagan said he does anticipate adding another day to include more players, but that is not yet guaranteed. The extra camp date would be Jan. 5, if it is added.

The camp is open to all children in third through sixth grade. A $50 registration fee will be due the day of camp.

“I think it would even be cool as a Christmas present to surprise your kid – that they get to play with a Harlem Globetrotter,” Flanagan said.

Social distancing will be enforced, and masks will be worn when players are not actively participating.

Players will be divided into age groups so they can work on basketball skills. Each player will learn the same skills, but drills will be suited to fit each group’s level of play.

At the camp, players can expect ball handling drills, shooting drills and to learn the fundamentals of shooting.

Winston said he is looking forward to working with Parks and Recreation for the camp – something he did when he used to work for Russellville Parks and Recreation.

“I always love getting to come back and work with kids,” Winston said. “It’s great being able to give back to the community, which is something the Globetrotters are really big on.”

Winston said he hopes being able to learn from him will also teach the players they can accomplish anything if they work hard enough.

“I want to be that example to them to work hard,” Winston said. “I’m from the same area they are, and look where I am. If I can do it, they can too.”
