Phil Campbell B-varsity picks up wins
The Phil Campbell B-varsity team has picked up several wins since taking on the Franklin County Varsity Tournament.
The Bobcat boys got back to their winning ways after what the team thought was a disappointing loss at the hands of rival Red Bay in the county tournament. The Bobcats defeated the East Lawrence Eagles 42-33 Jan. 18.
“I’m really proud of this bunch and how they responded,” said head coach Cantrell Tyson. “Guys like Cole Pace really stepped up for us and led the team.
“I’m even more proud of our bench players and our younger guys,” Tyson added. “Hayden Wingo, who is an eighth-grader, got pulled up and played his tail off.”
The Bobcats picked up their second win in a row, and three of the past four, after a 56-41 victory over the Colbert County Indians. Pace led the Bobcats with 21, followed by Andrew Green with 10.
The Bobcats let it rain with a barrage of three-point baskets, hitting eight of 15 on the night.
“I really felt we shot the three ball extremely well tonight – a little over 50 percent from deep is really impressive,” noted Tyson.
The team added a third in a row with a 68-57 victory over Franklin County rival Tharptown.
“I was really proud of our inside game tonight,” Tyson said. “A lot of the outside shots weren’t falling for us tonight, but the presence of Andrew Green and Braxten Goodson inside really helped even that out for us.”
Tyson again praised the play of one the team’s younger players, Wingo. “He came in and hit some very crucial three-point shots once Tharptown closed the gap.”
Green, Sage Raper and Braxten Goodson all had double doubles for the Bobcats: Green scored 17 and grabbed 14 rebounds; Goodson scored 16 and tallied 11 boards; and Raper notched 13 points and 12 rebounds. Green was three blocks shy of a triple double.
