Club Chronicles: Book Lovers continue living volunteer spirit
GFWC Book Lovers Study Club did not hold its regular monthly meetings in December or January because of the surge of COVID; however, this interference has not prevented the members from continuing to “Live the Volunteer Spirit.”
In December members donated pajamas and a few pieces of luggage to Franklin County DHR Foster Care. Toys were also donated and delivered to the Helen Keller Pediatric Toy Drive.
The focus for January has been education and libraries. The project for this month is supporting a reading program for children with special needs at Russellville West Elementary.
The special-needs classroom library lost most of its supplies in the fire of November 2019. The classroom needs Pre-K and kindergarten books.
Book Lovers Education and Libraries Chairperson Lela Ray has arranged a donation site at the Russellville Public Library. Just call the library at 256-332-1535, and someone will come out to your car to pick up the books. All donations need to be dropped off by Jan. 28.
In the club’s newsletter, members were reminded that January is Blood Donor Month. The blood supply has taken a hit because of the COVID pandemic. Members were encouraged to support the Russellville High School National Honor Society annual blood drive at the high school gym Feb. 9.
During January, committee chairs and officers have busy working on the GFWC Alabama yearly reports, which are due Feb. 1. All club members were asked to turn in their volunteer hours or donations for this report as soon as possible to club president Patricia Cox.
The General Federation of Women’s Club has made some significant changes in names and focus for signature programs, community service programs, advancement plans and affiliate organizations. Reporting workshops were presented at the AFWC fall district meetings as well as Zoom reporting workshops for those who could not attend. Revised reporting forms have been mailed or can be found on the GFWC Alabama website.
Upcoming events include the GFWC Alabama Board of Directors meeting Feb. 6 at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Hoover. The GFWC Alabama North District Meeting will be held March 13 at Double Springs. The 126th Annual GFWC Alabama State Convention will be held April 15-17 at Perdido Beach Resort.
