Subregion basketball repeatedly reschedules amid winter weather

While much of the state already knows who is going to the regional finals, teams in northwest Alabama haven’t even played the first subregion game. Winter weather – particularly its impact on local roadways – has wreaked havoc on post-season basketball in Franklin County and surrounding counties.

Subregion games originally scheduled for Monday and Tuesday of this week have been rescheduled every day with the hopes of the weather subsiding. With each new day came more ice, more snow and more subfreezing temperatures, resulting in postponements.

With the appearance of the sun and temperatures rising above freezing for the first time in days, it appears games will finally be played Saturday. Teams that win Saturday will play in a second subregion game Monday, with a shot to go to Hanceville for the Northwest Region finals next week.

Here is the updated schedule for Franklin County basketball teams Feb. 20:

Class 1A Subregion

Belgreen girls will host Shoals Christian at 2 p.m.

Belgreen boys will host Covenant Christian at 4 p.m.

Vina girls will travel to R.A. Hubbard at 2 p.m.

Class 2A Subregion

Red Bay boys will host Winston County at 2 p.m.

Class 3A Subregion

Phil Campbell girls will host Elkmont at 2 p.m.

Class 5A Subregion

Russellville boys will host Mae Jemison at 4 p.m.

The AHSAA has rescheduled the start of the Northwest Regional Basketball Championships at Wallace State-Hanceville for Feb. 23, to conclude Feb. 26.
