First–year softball coach Carmen Whitfield said she is excited to see what her new team can do as the season begins.

“We are ecstatic to be back on the field,” said Whitfield. “Even though the way last season ended was heartbreaking, it makes this year even more exciting for the girls and myself. I am just thankful to be back on the softball field, doing what I love.”

Whitfield, who came from Shoals Christian, has a solid core to build her team around in junior Taylor Cameron at pitcher, junior Leslie Staggs in the infield and sophomore Kyndall Morgan in the infield.

“Taylor was a key play for Tharptown last year and will be our ‘go-to’ pitcher this year,” said Whitfield. “I can’t wait to see how she performs for us.

“Leslie is a key infielder. She will keep the corners locked down for us this season.

“Kyndall is an all-around athlete, with a heart for the game. She is going to contribute to our team in more ways than one this season.”

Whitfield said she wants to get her team on the field and assess where they are at.

“This season we are looking to build, grow and enjoy the game,” said Whitfield. “We are looking to build our program as best we can. We are looking to grow as individuals on and off the field.

“Last season was taken away from these girls, so that should give them a new perspective and a sense of urgency to do what it takes to win.”
