Free class marks World Tai Chi and Qi Gong Day

Anna Carol Porter led a free combined session of qi gong and tai chi in downtown Russellville outside the A.W. Todd Centre Saturday for World Tai Chi and Qi Gong Day.

While relaxing music played, Porter led participants through a variety of slow exercises. She said the fluid movements can be adapted for standing, sitting or even lying down. The low impact activity can help reduce stress, improve focus and promote better sleep.

“Tai Chi and Qi Gong combine deep breathing techniques, gentle body movement and visualization techniques,” according to WorldTaiChiDay.org.

The day is celebrated the last Saturday in April with free classes beginning at 10 a.m. local time in the cities where events take place. Porter, a Russellville native and current resident, has held qi gong and tai chi classes in Russellville on other occasions as well.

“Some of the forms we practiced include the Eight Brocades, Sports Tai Chi and Healing Sounds, as well as Ringing the Bell, Becoming the Archer, Bow and Arrow and Becoming the Butterfly,” Porter said. “I’m so pleased with the participation and good weather for this year’s event. I plan to continue holding this activity each year, and I look forward to seeing participation grow.

“I always finish feeling more harmonious and in balance,” she added. “It’s a beautiful feeling. I love having the opportunity to share this meditative practice with others.”
