RHS girls return to win column

The Russellville Lady Golden Tigers varsity softball team used a balanced offensive attack to defeat the Hatton Lady Hornets by a 10-7 score April 26.

Jaiden Calvert led the way to victory with a home run and a double as part of a 2-for-3 performance that included five RBIs.

RHS (15-25) got hits from six other players, with Maddy Green and Emma Hubbert also getting doubles. Summer Butler added a hit and two RBIs for top of the batting order production. Kailee Simpson and Fallin Cox helped the cause with a hit and an RBI each. Natalie Nichols also had a single, and she walked once and scored a run.

Kailee Simpson got the start in the pitching circle, and she went into the fourth inning before being relieved by Jacey Moore. Simpson allowed five runs on six hits and struck out five.

Moore gave up two runs, and she allowed one hit and struck out two in more than three innings of work.

Florence 9, Russellville 4

RHS fell to the Lady Falcons April 19.

Green homered for Russellville and knocked-in two runs. Jenna Whitfield doubled twice and had an RBI. Simpson had an extra-base hit along with a single, and Calvert added two hits and an RBI, while Butler, Emma Campbell and Moore joined the hit column with singles.

Paislee James and Simpson did the pitching for Russellville.

West Point 15, Russellville 14

West Point won a home area game over the RHS squad in walk-off fashion with a base-hit April 20.

The two teams combined to hit six home runs in the slugfest. Homers for Russellville came off the bats of Green, Nichols and Simpson.

Whitfield had two doubles, while Calvert, Green, Nichols and Simpson all had one apiece. Cox and Campbell added singles, with Green leading the team in the contest with three RBIs.

Moore was the Russellville pitcher, and she threw 144 pitches in the circle.

Lawrence County 4, Russellville 0

Russellville head coach Josh Graham faced his former LCHS team for the second time this season, returning to Moulton to take on the Lady Red Devils for this area contest April 22.

The two teams will match up again in the upcoming area tournament, with RHS playing as the third seed and the Lady Devils taking the second spot.

West Point earned a bye in the three-team area tourney and will host as top seed.

RHS had three hits in the game, with Calvert continuing her hot-hitting with two singles. Whitfield had the other hit, and Nichols reached base on a walk.

Other baserunners for Russellville were Simpson and Hubbert.

Simpson was hit by a pitch, and Hubbert reached base on a fielder’s choice.

Simpson did the pitching for Russellville as well; she allowed no earned runs and struck out six batters.
