RHS athlete wins state in discus

The Russellville track and field team recently competed at the state competition in Gulf Shores for Class 5A, and the Golden Tigers had success.

In boys’ team events, Russellville finished in seventh place with 28.5 points under the leadership of head coach Barry Reach. After 18 events of scoring, UMS-Wright took first place with 145 points. Ramsay was second with 74, and Parker finished third with 68.

Brooks Scott of RHS won the individual state championship in discus at 139-11. Grayson Eady also turned in a memorable performance for Russellville in javelin with a second-place finish of 161-10, while Scott was No. 12 at 130-7 and Tilmon Baker finished No. 15 at 121-01.

Also competing at state from RHS were Ashaad Williams, who finished eighth in the 200-meter dash, and Emmanuel Cooper, No. 21 in the 400 meters.

Russellville’s Conner Warhurst tied for third in high jump, and TJ King was fifth behind first-place finisher Arthur Chitty of UMS-Wright at 6-8.25.

Warhurst also finished at No. 20 in long jump at 17-03. In triple jump, Cahleese Phillips of RHS was No. 17 at 38-01.50, and Taylor Crumpton was No. 19 at 37-04.50 behind first-place finisher Jaiden Rollins from UMS-Wright at 45-04.

In girls’ competition, Russellville was represented by Ella Burcham. She finished No. 21 in javelin finals at 76-03. Katie Wilkerson of Beauregard was first in the event.

The team state championship for girls went to UMS-Wright with 113 points. Brewbaker Tech was second with 68, while Lawrence County and Beauregard tied for third with 53 team points after 18 events were scored.

Gulf Shores hosted the 4A-7A outdoor state championship track and field events, while the 1A-3A events were held in Cullman.
