Football preview: Week One

PCHS (1-0) hosts Lamar County (1-0)

The Phil Campbell Bobcats will host the Lamar County Bulldogs this week after a season-opening win over Phillips 27-0. Lamar County beat rival South Lamar this past week 27-0 as well.

Historically, Phil Campbell is 7-12 against the Bulldogs. The Bobcats won this game in 2020, however, 33-6. It was Phil Campbell’s first win against Lamar County, dating back to 1999.

RHS (1-0) hosts Deshler (0-1)

This is one of the most storied rivalries in northwest Alabama. The two Tigers have met each other 94 times on the gridiron, and the series is as even as it gets – 45-45-4. The 2020 game was not played because of COVID-19. It was the first interruption of the series since 1988.

Prior to this past year, the two teams went in to overtime two years in a row, with the Golden Tigers coming out on top both times.

Russellville won its season opener this past week beating Decatur 27-15. Deshler lost to Muscle Shoals 52-14.

CANCELLED: THS (1-0) travels to Phillips (0-1)

The Tharptown Wildcats were set to travel to Bear Creek to play the Phillips Bears Friday, but the game was cancelled because of a COVID-19 outbreak at Phillips.

VHS (0-0) hosts Marion County (1-0)

The Vina Red Devils will kick off their season this week hosting the Marion County Red Raiders. Marion County leads this series 12-3.

The Red Raiders opened their season with a 35-6 win over Waterloo. Vina lost this game this past year, 35-0.
