In its regular meeting Nov. 16, the Phil Campbell City Council voted to accept an offer of $320,000 for Crown Castle to lease the city’s cell tower on Ballpark Road for 99 years.

Mayor Mike McQuary explained Crown Castle had already been leasing the tower, noting consideration is being given to using that money to “fix up Ballpark Road from one end to the other.”

The council also authorized the PC Volunteer Fire Department to purchase AMKUS fire rescue tools – a battery-operated cutter and a spreader. The equipment will replace broken emergency rescue tools. PC VFD Chief Mike Rice cited “expected durability, strength and spread” as the reasons for selecting these specific tools.

Eric Reason, in a follow-up from discussion during the previous council meeting, brought packets about the Lions Club. “Civic organizations help build up towns and communities,” Reason said. He explained 20 people would be needed as charter members to establish a chapter of the Lions Club.

“It’s a wonderful organization. They help people with sight difficulties and work to rebuild communities during disaster relief,” he said. “It’s an international organization, and it’s a big deal to charter a new club. It gets a lot of publicity for a community.”

Reason also spoke regarding an acre of property that was donated to the town for veterans. He suggested turning it into a Veterans Park with memorials for every major conflict to highlight the citizens of Phil Campbell who were involved in those conflicts.

The Council also issued a Farm-City Week proclamation.

Meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays. The next regular meeting of the Phil Campbell City Council is scheduled for Nov. 30, with the work session at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting directly after. Meetings are held at Phil Campbell City Hall.
