Unita Ann Baccus Thornton

Unita Ann Baccus Thornton, 80, of Phil Campbell passed away Jan. 7.

Visitation will be Jan. 12 from 6-9 p.m. at Akins Funeral Home, Russellville. Funeral service will be Jan. 13 at 1 p.m. at Ashridge United Methodist Church with Bro. Jonathan Todd officiating. The body will lie in state two hours prior to the service. Burial will be in Ashridge Cemetery.

Unita was a member of Ashridge United Methodist Church.

She was born Aug. 31, 1941, in Haleyville.

Unita was preceded in death by her husband, Luther (Butch) Thornton; her parents, Jim and Estelle Baccus; brothers, Kelly Baccus, William Baccus, Delano Baccus and Jimmy Baccus; and her sisters, Helen Baccus, Leona Otts, Hazel Thrasher, Christine Defoor, Margene Lewis and Joan Hood.

She is survived by her children, Sandy Allison (Mikey) and Andy Thornton (Tammy); her sisters, Wyvonia Borden (L.C.), Ethel Lee Lindley and Jewel Faye Hill; her grandchildren, Jessica Spurgeon (Daniel), Andrew Thornton (Emily), Darby Allison, Trevor Allison (Keylee) and Gracie, Alex, Maddie, Marshall, Duane, Mikey and Annie Allison; her great-grandchild, Ben Thornton; many others who called her maw-maw; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Darby Allison, Andrew Thornton, Trevor Allison, Alex Allison, Donny Hood, Lanier Defoor, Phillip Welborn and Terrell Baccus. Honorary pallbearers will be her other grandchildren and her nieces and nephews.  

The family would like to extend a special thanks to everyone who has shown their love and concern during these difficult weeks of sickness and our mother’s passing. Prayers are appreciated most of all.
