Golden Tigers push win streak to eight games before road loss at Scottsboro

The Class 5A No. 3-ranked Russellville baseball team extended its winning streak to eight games before falling in an extra-inning contest at Scottsboro during a busy week on the diamond.

Russellville 4, Northridge 3

The Golden Tigers went to Tuscaloosa to take on the No. 10 team in 6A for a double-header April 4.

In game one, Grayson Thorpe had two hits. including a double. Eli Gipson and Brayden Spurgeon picked up hits and RBIs. Reed Hill and Shayden Romans also hit safely for RHS.

Samuel Pace got the start on the mound and the win. Pace went four innings, allowing three runs, with two being earned.

Spurgeon got the save by working the final three frames. He gave up no hits, struck out four and walked one.

Russellville 8, Northridge 2

Northridge managed one hit off of Russellville pitching in game two.

Emitt Green got the start and the win. He threw five innings, allowing one unearned run. Green struck out nine and walked two.

Hill finished the game by also giving up an unearned run. He struck out two and walked two over a couple of hitless innings.

Canyon Pace hit a home run and also doubled and walked for RHS. He had three RBIs, while Gipson and Andrew Hatton added two hits apiece. Gipson drove in a run, stole two bases and scored twice.

Hill, Nathan Brockway, Spurgeon and Banks Langston all added hits. Brockway and Spurgeon both had RBIs.

Russellville 5, Nettleton, Miss., 2

RHS hosted Nettleton for two games April 7 and got the sweep.

Romans got the home team onto the scoreboard with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the first inning after Nettleton had taken a 1-0 lead. Romans added a fifth inning RBI just after Canyon Pace plated a run with a sacrifice fly, and Ethan Oliver finished the scoring with an RBI single in the same frame.

Thorpe had two doubles and scored twice. Russellville got additional hits from Hill, Brockway, Hatton and Casen Heaps.

Langston got the win by pitching the game’s first five innings. He allowed seven hits and two runs while throwing 72 pitches. The junior struck out seven and walked one.

Spurgeon picked up another save by working the final two innings. He gave up three hits, struck out two and walked a batter.

Russellville 9, Nettleton 1

The Golden Tigers extended their winning streak to eight – dating back to March 29 – with a victory in game two versus Nettleton.

Logan White was outstanding on the mound for Russellville. The junior lefty pitched a complete game. He struck out 13, allowed eight hits and walked one.

Hatton led the way at the plate with two doubles, two RBIs and a run. Spurgeon had a hit, three RBIs and two runs. Gipson and Canyon Pace both doubled, and Brockway had a hit, two walks and two runs.

Scottsboro 5, Russellville 4

Class 6A Scottsboro ended the RHS winning streak with an extra-inning victory April 9.

Canyon Pace homered and had two RBIs. Thorpe had two hits and drove in a run, and Gipson also had two hits and scored once.

Casen Heaps tripled and scored a run, while Romans and Brockway also hit safely.

Samuel Pace and Hill did the pitching for Russellville.

Russellville 11, Westbrook Christian 3

The Golden Tigers got back on the winning track with a victory over 2A No. 10 Westbrook Christian in game two of the day at Scottsboro.

Brockway and Oliver both had three hits each, with Brockway smacking two doubles and Oliver picking up one. Thorpe added two hits and three RBIs, while Canyon Pace had a hit and two RBIs.

Gipson, Hatton and Langston had singles and RBIs, and Casen Heaps also hit safely and scored a run.

Green, Spurgeon and Gipson did the pitching for RHS, with Green going five innings for the win. Spurgeon and Gipson went a scoreless inning each.
