DKG Alpha Upsilon enjoys Western-themed meeting

The Alpha Upsilon Chapter embraced the 2021-2023 Alabama Delta Kappa Gamma Biennium Theme “Get on the DKG Bus: Building and Unifying Our Sisterhood” at its October meeting.  The program topic was “Twelve Women Educators Impact the World.”

The meeting was held at Calvary Baptist Church with a Western flair in recognition of the 12 educators who founded Delta Kappa Gamma in 1929 at Austin, Texas. Alpha Upsilon sisters dressed in their Western attire to celebrate the 93 years of the DKG Society.

Tables were decorated with a @estern theme and a display that featured Southwestern artwork, textiles and books by DKG honorary member Laura Bush and Jenna Bush Hager.

Co-hostesses were the officers: Cheri McCain, president; Molly King, vice president; Debbie Nale, treasurer; and Debbie Beason, secretary. Refreshments consisted of barbecue sliders, chips, Western dip, dessert and drinks.

Karen Townsend gave the Inspirational Thought on the Wonders of Fall.

At each meeting an Alpha Upsilon member will be spotlighted for their dedication and service as an educator. The October meeting spotlighted Molly Bates’ many accomplishments, including 19 years as a member of DKG, presented by Leah Masterson.

President McCain presented how each meeting will feature an imaginary “Ride on the DKG Bus” to one of 17 countries to celebrate our DKG International sisterhood. Canada, Europe, Central America, Caribbean Paradise and other smaller countries, where more than 100,000 DKG sisters live, will be studied.

Cheri stated, “Along the way on our travels, we will be reminded of our society’s international theme of Leading Women Educators Impacting Education Worldwide. We will get to know about different countries’ education systems and enjoy art, music, food and culture.”

Three of our chapter members – Cheri McCain, Gayle McAlister and Beverly Donaldson – along with 112 educators attended the Alabama State Delta Kappa Gamma August meeting in Montgomery. The sessions included valuable information for state chapters.

State President Penny Christian reported that the Alabama DKG donated $500 in memory of the two teachers – Irma Garcia and Eva Mireles – who were killed in the Robb Elementary shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Members were encouraged to register for the Alabama State Convention in Tuscaloosa at the Hotel Capstone March 3-5, 2023. Reminders were given to the members planning to attend the Alabama State Weekend of Wonder that will be held in the Shoals area Oct. 14-16.

The finale of the meeting featured Patricia Cox – retired physical education teacher – teaching members how to “line dance,” followed by a book swap. We had a “YeeHaw” lot of fun!

The Beta State Collect was read by the members for the closing of the meeting.
