PC approves Christmas lights, other needs

Phil Campbell is getting ready to celebrate the season with a generous sprinkling of extra Christmas cheer this year.

In the council’s Nov. 15 meeting, Councilwoman Lynn Landers, in response to the question of how many lights were being considered for purchase to go in the park, recommended starting small and perhaps adding more next year. Councilman Eddie Marbutt suggested purchasing more after Christmas in the hopes they’ll be a cheaper then.

The council approved an initial expenditure of $600 to purchase lights.

The lights will be turned on for the first time following the Phil Campbell Christmas parade. The parade takes place Dec. 8 at 6 p.m.

In other council business:

  • Phil Campbell town clerk and magistrate Virginia Burks reported following a repair assessment on the weather siren, it appears the siren was struck by lightning, which will require another repair estimate.
  • Phil Campbell Mayor Michael McQuary reported the new generator is operational, capable of powering the fire department, safe room and City Hall.
  • McQuary reported 40 street signs need to be replaced, at a cost of $692.40, and the council approved the purchase of the signs.
  • The council voted in favor of allowing David Baker to clean the garbage truck every two months to help get rid of rust and prevent it from forming in the future.
  • The council voted in favor of letting Robinson Metal Roofing and Vinyl Siding put a new roof on the fire department, at a cost of $11,000, which is under the bid law, using American Rescue Plan Act money.
  • Phil Campbell resident Eric Reason thanked Phil Campbell Police Chief Jessica Clements for her assistance with aggressive dogs on his property.
  • The council approved a request from Maria Romero, of 28 Holder St., to park an RV there for six months until her house is built.
