Vina boys win Thanksgiving tournament

The Vina Red Devil boys won their Thanksgiving invitational tournament Saturday. The Red Devils beat Waterloo 51-37 and Brilliant 39-29 to keep the championship trophy at home.

In the championship game, Vina jumped out to an early lead on Brilliant and hung on for the win.

Vina led Brilliant 11-5 at the end of the first quarter, but the Tigers cut the Red Devil lead to 17-14 at halftime. Vina increased the lead to 26-19 at the end of the third quarter and outscored Brilliant 13-10 in the fourth quarter to win the championship.

Hunter Griffith led Vina with 14 points, followed by Conner Davidson with 12 points. Nate Stidham added seven points, Christian Purser four points and Grayson Ridge two points.

In the opening game of the tournament, Conner Davidson scored 25 points to lead Vina to the win.

Vina opened up an 11-7 lead in the first quarter. Davidson scored 12 points in the second quarter to help the Red Devils extend their lead to 30-17 at halftime, and Vina increased the lead to 41-28 at the end of the third quarter to cruise to victory.

GIRLS

The Vina varsity girls picked up their third win of the year Saturday with a 53-39 beating of the Sheffield Bulldogs in the Vina Holiday Tournament.

Vina opened the girls tournament with a loss to Waterloo. The Cougars hit 15 three-pointers in the game to take the 65-47 win.

Vina was led by Kaitlyn Athey with 24 points, followed by Sara Harper with six points and seven assists.

In the Sheffield game, Harper led scoring with 20 points, followed by Athey with 15.  Khylee Brooks and Kaley Attaway added eight points each.

Vina beat the Berry Wildcats 51-17 – Athey leading with 31 points with seven three-pointers and Attaway adding 11 points – and Cherokee 50-19, with Harper leading with 13 points.
