Russellville, Belgreen girls take court for basketball battle

The Russellville Lady Golden Tigers hosted Belgreen in pre-Thanksgiving varsity basketball action, and the two teams played a close contest that came down to the end.

Russellville (4-2) outscored the Lady Bulldogs in the game’s final quarter to get the 57-53 win.

The Golden Tiger girls trailed 14-8 after the first period, and Belgreen was able to keep the lead going into the half by a 25-21 total. It was the second half when the RHS girls made their move by outscoring BHS 17-12 in the third quarter and 19-16 in the fourth.

Avery Watts led Russellville with 16 points. She was joined in double figures by Anna Beth Oliver with 15 and Ella Copeland with 14. Oliver was on fire from beyond the arc with five three-pointers.

Jacey Moore had six points for RHS, Hope Bonman added five, and Jenna Whitfield scored one.

Noelle Willingham and Dacota Green tied at the top of the Belgreen scoring column with 13 points apiece. Alayna Tate was next with eight, and she was followed by the trio of Isabella Tate, Bryn Scott and Carson Hovater with five points each. Makayla Willingham added four for the Lady Bulldogs.

Russellville 50, Colbert County 27

RHS visited Colbert County High School Nov. 21 and got the 50-27 win.

Russellville led 9-5 at the end of the first quarter and held a 25-15 advantage at the half. The lead grew in the third period as the Lady Golden Tigers outscored the Lady Indians 19-6.

Russellville was led in scoring by Moore’s 15 points. Copeland added 12, and Laila Hill scored 10. Oliver picked up seven points, and Whitfield had six.

Jasper 63, Russellville 25

A trip to Jasper to take on the Vikings the following evening wasn’t as successful for RHS. Jasper used a 20-3 first quarter to set the pace for a 63-25 victory. Russellville trailed 42-13 at the half and 58-17 after three quarters.

Russellville’s leading scorer was Moore with 15.

BOYS

The Russellville varsity boys split games with Colbert County and Jasper during the week of Thanksgiving.

Russellville 67, Colbert County 58

RHS went to Leighton and defeated Colbert County by a 67-58 final score. The Golden Tigers outrebounded CCHS 36-27, and both teams shot 31 percent from three-point land.

Jasper 84, Russellville 52

Jasper hosted the Golden Tigers Nov. 29, and Russellville fell to 2-1 on the season with an 84-52 loss. The 5A Vikings (4-1) outshot RHS 48 percent to 33 percent from the field. Jasper also was more effective from beyond the three-point line, shooting at a 44 percent clip to 25 percent by Russellville.
