PC tops Belgreen in thriller

The Phil Campbell Lady Bobcats edged out the Belgreen Lady Bulldogs in a thriller that went down to the wire, with the Bobcats coming out on top 53-50.

Phil Campbell led for much of the game, until Belgreen’s Noelle Willingham hit a short jumper to tie the game 50-50.

The Bobcat girls responded on their next possession when Macy Hardy nailed a three-pointer to give the Bobcats the lead, and Phil Campbell held on for the win.

Belgreen led Phil Campbell 15-13 at the end of the first quarter. Phil Campbell outscored Belgreen 19-10 to take a 32-25 lead. Phil Campbell extended that lead early in the third quarter before Belgreen came storming back to cut the Bobcat lead to 43-39 at the end of the quarter.

Hannah Welborn led the Bobcats with 15 points, scoring all but two points in the second and third quarters. Hardy followed with 11 points, making a three-pointer in the first, second and fourth quarters.

Madison Branch added eight points, Allie Herring seven points, Kaley Motes six points and Sidda Rogers six points.

Belgreen’s Dacota Green led all scorers with 21 points. Green got hot from behind the arch, making five three-pointers and going four-for-four from the free throw line.

Willingham added nine points, Bryn Scott seven points, Alayna Tate five points, Carson Hovater four points, Isabella Tate two points and Makenna Fisher two points.

In other recent action on the court, the Phil Campbell girls lost their first area game of the season 60-47 at Danville. The Hawks led the Bobcats 27-23 at halftime and 45-36 at the end of the third quarter. Branch led Phil Campbell with 18 points, followed by Herring with 10 points.

Phil Campbell also lost to Belmont, Miss., this past week, 62-31. Hardy led the Bobcats with 10 points.

For Belgreen, Green had a big week behind the three-point arch. Green put up five more three-pointers Tuesday night at home against Tharptown. Green’s effort helped the Bulldogs beat the Wildcats 50-21.

Belgreen jumped out to a 15-7 lead in the first quarter and extended that lead to 25-14 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, the Bulldogs had a commanding 39-18 lead.

Green led all scorers with 21 points. She was followed by Willingham with nine points, Scott with seven points, Alayna Tate with seven points, Hovater with four points, Fisher with two points and Isabella Tate with two points.

Sarah Mansell led Tharptown with eight points, followed by Kyndall Morgan with four points, Kaitlyn Simmons with four points, Savannah Romans with three points and Autumn Montgomery with two points.

Belgreen lost to Waterloo 59-46. Green led with 13 points, followed by Scott with 12 points and Willingham with 11 points.
